This travel tissue holder project is the easy way to carry tissues on the go. Shops used to sell packs of travel tissues to pack neatly instead of taking a bulky box of tissues. These packs were wrapped in plastic like the ones below, so I decided to make my own sustainable fabric version that can be filled with tissues from a bigger box.
You will need:
Fat quarter of main fabric
Fat quarter of lining fabric
Fusible interfacing (medium weight)
(Cometoquilt have a nice range of fabrics)
Cutting instructions
Cut the following pieces from both the main fabric and the lining fabric –
1 piece: 10” x 6½” for back of tissue holder
2 pieces: 10”x 4” for front sections of tissue holder
Cut the following pieces of fusible interfacing –
1 piece: 9½ ” x 6”
2 pieces: 9½ ” x 3½ ”
To sew
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the lining pieces.
With wrong sides together, baste the main and lining back pieces together down each short side with a 0.5cm seam allowance and a large basting stitch.
Take the front sections of the holder and with wrong sides together, fold and press 5mm along one long edge, towards the lining side, and then turn under another 5mm, creating a double fold hem on both pieces.
Topstitch along the pressed edge on both front sections.
Place the back section and two front sections with right sides together. Overlap the front sections slightly, and pin. Taking a 1cm seam allowance, stitch all the way around the edge of the tissue holder.
Reinforce the join of the front sections as you sew them by reverse stitching for strength.
Clip the corners of the tissue holder and turn through.
Fill the tissue holder with tissues then it’s ready to use.
